good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. oscar winning actress angelina jolie is making a startling announcement this morning. in an op-ed piece in today's "new york times," jolie reveals she underwent a double mastectomy in order to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer. in the piece titled "my medical choice" jolie says she opted for the procedure after learning she carries a gene which sharply increases the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. the actress said she began the three-month procedure in february after her doctor estimated she had an 87% chance of contracting breast cancer. once i knew that this was my reality, jolie writes, i decided to be pro-active and to minimize the risk as much as i could. it's an issue already deeply personal to jolie. her mother died in 2007 of

ovarian cancer at the age of 56. jolie, who turns 38 next month, writes she now can tell her children they don't need to worry about losing her to breast cancer and she adds that she hopes her decision to go public about the procedure inspires other women to get tested. it is my hope that if they have a high risk, they too will know they have strong options. jolie says her chances of developing breast cancer have now dropped to under 5%. she also points out in the article that the cost of the genetic testing remains an obstacle for many women. according to the american cancer society, more than 39,000 women in the u.s. will die of breast cancer this year. president obama calls the targeting of conservative groups by the internal revenue service outrageous. the agency first blamed low level employees in its cincinnati office but we are now learning that high level irs executives knew of the plan more than a year ago including the

acting commissioner, steve miller. susan mcginnis is in washington with more. >> reporter: a hearing coming up on friday will be the beginning of a long and extensive review of irs conduct. outrage on capitol hill is growing among republicans and democrats and now the president is joining the chorus. president obama is promising to hold top irs officials accountable for the agency's targeting of conservative political groups. >> i have no patience with it. i will not tolerate it. we will make sure we find out exactly what happened. >> reporter: the internal revenue service admits using extra scrutiny when tea party organizations and other conservative groups applied for tax exempt status. lawmakers want to know who knew about it and why they were repeatedly told it was not happening. >> it appears as though there was some plan behind it. we don't know how far it goes. who ordered this to be done. >> reporter: cbs news has obtained a treasury department time line of developments.

it shows irs specialists first began singling out tea party groups in march of 2010. the groups complained and more than a year later in june of 2011, the house ways and means committee send the first of three letters to the irs asking if it was targeting conservative groups. the irs said no insisting the agency was apolitical and nonpartisan. acting irs commissioner steven miller signed some of the responses to lawmakers. he's expected to face some tough questions when he testifies before congress on friday. >> this is a big deal. we're not going to let it rest. >> reporter: house republicans are introducing a bill that would make it a crime for irs workers to discriminate against groups for their political views. and more are questioning who at the white house knew about this and when. the president said he learned of it all on friday but jay carney, the white house spokesman, said yesterday that the white house counsel learned about an investigation into this matter

the week of april 22nd. >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. republican lawmakers are moving forward with their investigation of last year's attack on the u.s. mission in benghazi, libya. the obama administration continues to deny allegations of a coverup. the white house insists there was no effort to change the so-called talking points to downplay the possibility of terrorism. president obama says the investigation is politically motivated. >> the whole issue of talking points frankly throughout this process has been a side show. suddenly three days ago this gets spun up as if there's something new to the story. >> e-mails made public last week show senior administration officials asking that references to terror groups be deleted from the talking points. next week the philadelphia jury that convicted abortion doctor kermit gosnell of first-degree murder will hear

evidence on whether he should face the death penalty. gosnell was convicted yesterday in the deaths of three babies delivered alive and then killed. he was also convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the overdose death of an abortion patient. new orleans police are searching for a suspect in the mother's day shooting. police say multiple people have identified the shooter at 19-year-old akein scott. surveillance video shows the gunman opening fire during the mother's day parade. 19 people were shot. this morning three are in critical condition. police have issued a search warrant and they say they have good leads. >> we know more about you than you think we know. i would recommend strongly that mr. scott contact anybody who he's comfortable with to turn himself in. >> police still don't know if there was more than one gunman.

the ap calls the seizure "massive and unprecedented." the records include outgoing calls for the work and personal phone numbers of reporters between april and may of last year. the government hasn't said why it sought the phone records. on the "cbs moneywatch," a warning about the cost of prescription drugs and taco bell fans, get ready for the waffle taco. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning, ashley. >> asian markets were lower on profit taking. tokyo's nikkei shed a fraction and hong kong hang seng lost a quarter percent. the dow fell about 27 points while the nasdaq gained two points. retail sales reversed a decline in march with a mall gain in april. according to a new economic report from the commerce department, it found that the

falling price of gas helped drive sales of everything from cars to clothes and electronics. prescription drugs could become a lot more expensive depending where you live. critics warn expensive specialty drugs such as those used to treat cancer could cost patients thousands more under the health care reform law. in california, patients would pay up to 30% of the cost while in new york state they would pay a maximum $70 co-pay. more bad news for financial news service bloomberg. a report in the british paper "the financial times" claims more than 10,000 private messages sent by bloomberg's clients containing sensitive information has been leaked online. bloomberg ceo has apologized for allowing reporters to access client information. and taco bell is testing a theory that you might want a taco for breakfast too. a woman posted this photo of waffle taco. check that out to instagram which went viral quickly. it's being sold at certain

the names of 321 fallen officers added to the wall were read during the vigil last night. nearly 20,000 names are now engraved on the monument. a police officer severely wounded in a gun battle with the boston bombing suspects is talking publicly for the first time. officer richard donohue took a bullet in his thigh which severed an artery causing him to lose almost all of his blood. john miller has this exclusive interview with the cop who risked everything. >> reporter: this is officer donohue at the scene of that shooting. the officer who was killed, sean collier, was a good friend of his. within three hours, dick donohue would be the next to go down. did you have any idea at any point that you were looking for the boston marathon bombers? >> at first it was no. it just appeared to be some crazy random act of violence. the gunfire being exchanged and once they started throwing the

bombs or improvised explosive devices that i guess you don't need to say words. this is it. these are the guys. >> reporter: not long after arriving at the scene, donohue was shot. so what do you know about what happened to you? >> my partner tackled me just to get me down and it was in front of someone's driveway, and he applied pressure trying to figure out where i was shot. >> reporter: kim donohue was at home when the doorbell rang. it was a transit police sergeant in uniform. >> i immediately opened the door and i just said you are my worst nightmare. >> reporter: you said those words? >> it's the first thing i said to him. i know why you're here. you better tell me if dick is dead right now. don't walk in this house. don't come past the door. tell me if dick is dead. he said he's not dead. he said he's in the o.r. he was shot in the groin.

but he is not dead. >> reporter: a bullet severed donohue's femoral artery. he lost so much blood his heart stopped and he wasn't breathing. i mean, technically you kind of died. >> i did die. >> reporter: there's this horrible cliche that out of every terrible experience there's a silver lining. have you found one? >> absolutely. there's more of the silver lining in this than anything bad that's come out of this. and when dick got out of the icu and when he feels better, this will ultimately be the best thing that has ever happened to us. we will never not enjoy a day. we will never not enjoy a hug or a kiss. my hope is that once he returns to normal, we'll only remember the good from this. >> reporter: for kim and dick donohue, life basically starts over. they have a 7-month-old baby boy and dick donohue of course wants to get back to police work. john miller, cbs news, new york.

the first weddings will happen august 1st. she devoted her life to helping others. tv psychologist joyce brothers has passed away. dr. brothers made a long career out of giving advice and often made cameos in movies and television series. she published 15 books and wrote a column that appeared in hundreds of newspapers. dr. joyce brothers was 85 years old. a relaxing day at the pool turned into terror when a bear decided to drop by. the black bear had been seen roaming around backyards monday after wandering down from the mountains. two schools were put on lockdown. the bear was spotted by three people in a swimming pool and they ran to safety. >> i hear him yelling and the bear just looks over from right there. that fence over there. and then they come running out. i'm stuck in the middle of the pool. i have a beer in my hand too so i couldn't get out. that's why i was running in so

newly released police recovers records offer more clues about ariel castro. meantime, a police dispatcher and an officer are speaking out about the day the kidnapped women were found. dean reynolds reports. >> reporter: exactly one week ago tonight, cleveland police officers were rushing to seymour street after a woman with a child called 911 for help. >> help me. i'm amanda berry. >> reporter: steps away from the 911 operator who took that call, veteran dispatcher jennifer daunch declared a code one ordering an immediate response from officers in the area. >> i saw it on the screen first and my partner and i looked at

each other and somehow we just had a feeling that it could be her. any call that says i'm amanda berry and i've been gone for ten years, you have to have a sense of urgency. my heart was racing. i mean, i was trembling. i was crying. >> reporter: at the same time one of the responding officers, anthony espada, was pulling up to the address and noticed the woman. my partner was driving, he wrote in his report obtained by cbs news, so she came up to the driver's side. he looked up at me and he's like, it's her. just emotion from that point that he confirmed it was amanda was overwhelming. minutes later on a search of the home's second floor, espada was surprised by captive michelle knight. within moments she came charging at me. she jumped onto me. she's, like, you saved us. you saved us. seconds later gina dejesus was in his arms as well. >> we found them.
